Asheville -- July 2, 2024: Asheville Fire Department Press Release: Each Fourth of July, thousands of people, most often

children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks, which include devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death. That’s why the Asheville Fire Department (AFD) recommends leaving the fireworks to the professionals.

The Asheville Fire Department enforces the North Carolina Fire Code, which includes strict restrictions on the sale and use of illegal fireworks. Legal fireworks include novelty items that do not explode, fly, spin, or leave the ground. These include fountains, smoke devices, snappers, glowworms, sparklers, poppers, and snakes. Illegal fireworks, which are prohibited, include any that explode or leave the ground/project into the air, such as Roman candles, firecrackers, aerial fireworks, and bottle rockets.

Even legal fireworks can pose significant risks, causing burn injuries and other accidents. The Asheville Fire Department encourages residents to consider safe alternatives for a fun and patriotic celebration. Try an outdoor movie night, use glow sticks instead of sparklers, or have fun with red, white, and blue silly string!

For those who choose to celebrate with legal fireworks, please follow these safety tips to ensure a safe holiday:

Always have a nearby water source.
Never allow children to use lighters.
Be mindful of pets who may get scared.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Use fireworks only in private settings.
Remember, sky lanterns are illegal.
"We want everyone to have a joyful and safe Fourth of July," states Fire Chief Mike Cayse. "By following these safety guidelines and enjoying the professional fireworks display, we can all celebrate without risking injury or damage."

AFD wishes everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July
