AFD Launches Community Risk Reduction Division
Asheville -- July 2, 2024: Press Release: The Asheville Fire Department (AFD) is excited to announce significant developments
that align with its commitment to continuously improve services and expand capabilities. In response to community feedback gathered through various sessions and surveys, AFD recognizes the need for increased community risk reduction efforts.
In January, Fire Chief Mike Cayse outlined his vision for the department, focusing on four major areas: Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Workforce Development, and Emergency Management. To enhance the department’s Emergency Management capabilities, AFD has created a new division: Community Risk Reduction (CRR).
The CRR division, led by Division Chief Kelly Hinz, represents a strategic advancement in AFD's mission to expand Emergency Management. This new division will serve as a centralized resource for all special events, manage AFD’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), and include Fire and Life Safety Education initiatives. The establishment of CRR offers a fantastic opportunity for professional growth and development within the department.
"We heard the community's call for enhanced risk reduction and have taken decisive action to address those concerns," said Chief Mike Cayse. "The creation of the Community Risk Reduction division allows us to break out of traditional structures and embrace new, innovative approaches to emergency management and public safety."
CRR will play a critical role in ensuring that AFD meets the community's expectations and continues to provide exceptional service. By focusing on risk reduction and emergency preparedness, this division will help safeguard the well-being of Asheville’s residents and visitors.
The Asheville Fire Department looks forward to the positive impact this new division will have on the community and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and service.
