As North Carolina gears up for the highly anticipated 2024 election, the democratic process takes center stage once again.

November 5, 2024, is when the next presidential election will take place. The dates of other elections, however, may differ.  Local, state, and federal legislators are up for election. A link is provided at the bottom of this page to find more information.
 

Tuesday, March 5, 2024, is the day of the 2024 primary election, which also includes the presidential preference primary. Voters in this election select the candidates who will represent their parties as the nominees for the general election.

What Constitutes a Primary Voter?

Voters belonging to any political party are only permitted to cast party ballots for their own 
Voters without affiliation are free to cast ballots for any political party or, if none is offered, a nonpartisan one. Voters are only allowed to participate in one primary per party.

2024 Primary Election
The 2024 primary election, including the presidential preference primary, is Tuesday, March 5, 2024. During this election, voters choose which candidates should be the party nominees to appear on the general election ballot. The 2024 general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.

In-person early voting for the 2024 primary election begins Thursday, Feb. 15, and ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.

Here are voter dates and deadlines for the 2024 primary election in North Carolina:

Feb. 9, 2024: Voter registration deadline (5 p.m.).*
Feb. 15, 2024: In-person early voting begins; same-day registration available.
Feb. 27, 2024: Absentee ballot request deadline (5 p.m.).*
March 2, 2024: In-person early voting ends (3 p.m.).
March 5, 2024: Primary Election Day.
March 5, 2024: Absentee ballot return deadline (7:30 p.m.).*
