Buncombe County -- June 8, 2023: Outdoor fun for Buncombe County kids in 7th-12th grades, sign up now!

Surveying salamanders, removing invasive species, and an overnight camp adventure are some of the fun activities happening at 2023 WILD Excursions, a FREE summer field trip program for rising 7th-12th graders.

The program, through Buncombe County Soil & Water, has three field trip opportunities:

Appalachian Highland Science Learning Center – June 15 – 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Taking place at Purchase Knob, kids will get to try out being a community scientist for a day. National Parks Service educators will explain some of their ongoing projects including a salamander survey and macroinvertebrate sampling. Click here to reserve a spot

Blue Ridge Belonging – July 7 – 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. This field trip will focus on what makes the region such a special place to live in. Participants will help remove invasive species in a rare mountain bog and tour the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) Community Farm. Click here to reserve a spot

Roan Highland Camp Out – August 18-19 – Noon to noon. Experience traditional summer camp with a mix of nature learning with an overnight camp at SAHC. Campers will explore the sights and help with work to protect endangered species in the area. Click here to reserve a spot

What to bring: participants should bring their lunch, a water bottle, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and bug spray.

Participants will meet at Buncombe County Agricultural and Land Resources Office, 49 Mount Carmel Road in Asheville for all activities.
