New Public Safety Complex Underway in Yancey County
Yancey County -- August 12, 2025: Construction is underway on a new public safety complex behind Buchanan and Young, which will house the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Management, Fire Marshal's Office, and a new 911 Center.
The Yancey County Sheriff's Office confirmed the project is moving ahead of schedule and is on track for a summer 2026 completion.
The post by the Sheriff's Office aimed to address rumors that the project had been stopped. "Construction is moving full steam ahead, currently ahead of schedule, and set to be completed in the summer of 2026," the office stated.
The new facilities are a much-needed upgrade for the county's first responders. The Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management are currently operating out of an "old garage," and the 911 Center is located in a building that is "over 100 years old." The new complex is designed to provide the necessary tools and space for these departments to operate effectively and keep the community safe for decades to come.
Funding for the Project
The post was also clear about the funding sources, assuring residents that no local tax dollars are being used for the project.
The new Sheriff's Office, Emergency Management, and Fire Marshal's Office are being fully funded by state appropriation money.
The new state-of-the-art 911 Center is being funded by a 911 Grant.
A press release from the N.C. Department of Information Technology confirms a grant of over $5.5 million was awarded to Yancey County Communications for the new 911 facility. This grant is part of a larger effort by the state to support facility and equipment upgrades at 911 call centers across North Carolina.
