Buncombe County -- May 7, 2023: At around 1:40 Sunday morning, a deputy with the
Buncombe Sheriff's Office was securing warrants and helping a woman obtain a protective order
following a recent incident.  

The suspect in this event entered the building's foyer, which houses the magistrate's office, at the Buncombe County Detention Facility. The suspect resisted being arrested when the deputy and an officer from the Asheville Police Department approached to place him under custody, and a fight resulted.

After pulling out a gun, the suspect shot the deputy in the shoulder. The suspect was hit by the deputy's bullets in return, fled the scene, and was later apprehended outside Mission Hospital. During the fight, an APD officer was also assaulted. 

The deputy from the Sheriff's Office was taken to the hospital and later released; he is currently recuperating at home. The APD officer suffered only minor wounds. The suspect is still being monitored at Mission Hospital. 
As of Sunday morning, the NC SBI was still investigating the crime scene, and the magistrate's office was closed.

Update from Buncombe County Sheriff's Office:

The Deputy was transported to the hospital where he was released a short time later and is now resting at home.

At approximately 1:40 a.m. this morning, a Deputy with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office was shot outside the Magistrate’s Office while attempting to serve a warrant. The suspect was also shot, fled the scene and has been taken into custody. Both individuals have been transported to Mission Hospital for treatment.
The Buncombe County Detention Facility and Magistrate’s Office, located at 20 Davidson Drive remain under lockdown. The NC SBI will investigate the shooting.
