STATEMENT REGARDING SOCIAL MEDIA THREAT


At approximately 8:45 AM on January 31, Jackson County Public Schools, NC district administration was made aware of a general threat circulating on social media that was associated with students at Smoky Mountain High School. The district immediately notified local law enforcement who deployed additional resources to the school, contacted the SBI and began an investigation within minutes. A call to parents with information about the threat was made by the school at 9:30 AM.
The investigation by law enforcement is ongoing and no additional information is available at this time. Jackson County Public Schools, NC takes threats very seriously and will work with authorities to identify and prosecute individuals who are involved.
