Burnsville Man Arrested for Internet, Phone Cable Theft Causing Outages

Yancey County --  In relation to an investigation into the theft of phone and internet cables on Highway 80 South, which caused ongoing

interruptions in internet service, the Yancey County Sheriff's

Office has taken Burnsville resident Nathan Carl Cooper, 46, into custody.

Cooper's activities created extensive inconveniences for businesses and residents, and the estimated damages were around $30,000. Those impacted have experienced severe inconvenience and high repair costs as a result of the theft.

Sheriff Shane Hilliard stresses the seriousness of the offense: “Tampering with communication lines not only creates costly damage, but also disrupts daily life and creates potential safety concerns. Our office is committed to holding those responsible accountable.”

Cooper has been charged with Felony Larceny, Felony Possession of Stolen Goods/Property, Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Felony Possession of Controlled Substance on Prison/Jail Premises, Misdemeanor Drug Paraphernalia, and Felony Injuring Utility Wires/Fixtures. Cooper is being held in the Yancey County Detention Center under a $210,000 bond.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
