Buncombe County -- James Randel Cope was sentenced to at least 32 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction after being convicted of two charges of indecent liberties with a minor.
Judge Alan Thornburg presided over the case in Buncombe County Superior Court. Cope received two consecutive sentences ranging from 16 to 29 months for each crime, with a minimum active term of 32 months. Cope will be compelled to register as a sex offender for 30 years after his release, and he will have a lifetime no-contact order with his victims.

The allegations arose from an investigation by the Black Mountain Police Department.
Both victims in this instance were contacted about the plea bargain. One child victim chose to attend in court, make a statement, and approve of the agreed-upon resolution.
“The District Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting the children of Buncombe County,” said District Attorney Todd Williams. “We appreciate the diligent work of the Black Mountain Police Department in this case and the courage of the victims who came forward.”
