Canton -- August 4, 2024: Canton is taking a significant step forward in its recovery from the devastating floods

of 2021 by relocating its fire station. The existing station suffered severe damage during the floods, highlighting the need for a safer location.

This move is backed by a Federal Funding request of nearly $5.8 million is part of a larger appropriations bill. The bill, which includes funding for various federal programs under the Department of Transportation and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, aims to address critical infrastructure needs in the area.

The decision to relocate the fire station is driven by the need to ensure that it is positioned out of flood-prone areas, thereby enhancing the town's emergency response capabilities. This move not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also anticipates future growth in Canton. With an eye on the town's expansion, the new fire station will be designed to accommodate the increasing demands of a growing population.

Town officials have been working diligently to identify a suitable site for the new station. While the exact location is yet to be finalized, it is expected to be closely tied to the fate of the former Pactiv Evergreen paper mill property. This strategic move is part of a broader plan to revitalize and strengthen the town's infrastructure, ensuring that Canton is better prepared for future challenges.

The funding request was included in the appropriations bill, which is currently awaiting formal approval by the Senate and the House.

Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers emphasized the importance of this project, stating that it represents a promise to the town's residents and firefighters to prioritize their safety and resilience. By relocating the fire station, Canton is taking a proactive step toward safeguarding its community and ensuring a more robust emergency response system for years to come.
