Asheville -- July 22, 2024: The Asheville City Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, July 23 at Harrah's Cherokee Center

Asheville to discuss the final proposal for the Meadows at Haw Creek housing complex.

The proposed development at 767 New Haw Creek Road, spanning 27 acres, has faced criticism from the East Asheville community ever since it was introduced by L.B. Jackson and Company last year.

As per the City Council's agenda, Margaret B King, the owner of the land, and Warren Sugg from Civil Design Concepts, who is handling the project, are requesting a change in zoning for the plot of land. This is to build a residential development with 84 units, comprising of 49 single-family homes and 35 townhomes. The development will also include parking spaces, amenities for residents, and infrastructure for managing stormwater.

Advocates of the rezoning argue that it aligns with the objectives outlined in the Living Asheville Comprehensive Plan, such as the creation of streets that are easy to walk on and the development of infrastructure for pedestrians. Additionally, it contributes to the expansion of the city's network of greenways.

Critics argue that the project will alter the essence of the area, leading to increased traffic congestion and issues relating to infrastructure.
