Buncombe County -- June 6, 2023: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has recently approved a substantial investment of $27.9 million for a crucial section of Interstate-40 in Asheville, North Carolina.

This comprehensive project will encompass pavement and bridge rehabilitation, focusing on addressing the condition of four bridges over Hominy Creek and two bridges over the French Broad River. By prioritizing infrastructure improvements and implementing traffic management plans, the NCDOT aims to enhance road safety, ensure smooth traffic flow, and minimize disruptions to the local community.

Revitalizing Infrastructure and Enhancing Safety

Asheville's Interstate-40 plays a pivotal role in connecting the city with neighboring regions and facilitating traffic movement.  The bridge rehabilitation component of the project will tackle issues such as spalling concrete substructure components and improving the riding surface on the bridge decks. By addressing these critical maintenance needs, the NCDOT aims to enhance the structural integrity of the bridges, prolong their lifespan, and ensure the safety of motorists traveling across them.

Minimizing Disruptions and Managing Traffic

Recognizing the significance of minimizing disruptions to commuters and the local community, the NCDOT has developed comprehensive traffic management plans for the project. Most lane closures will be scheduled during overnight hours when traffic volumes are typically lower to limit inconveniences.

While the bridge repairs are underway, access to Hominy Creek and the French Broad River will be maintained as much as possible. At each of the access locations, there will be prominently placed caution signs. Users of the French Broad River will be informed by these signs about the location of the project, which will allow them to navigate the area in a secure manner.
