Canton --  August 7, 2025:  The left lane of I-40 West, located just before Buncombe County's Exit 33 (Newfound Road), will remain closed for emergency road repairs until 5 p.m. on Friday, August 8.

The closure is a result of a crash that occurred on Thursday.

The incident involved a dump truck that reportedly suffered a tire blowout, causing it to strike the concrete median and catch fire. The fire caused significant damage to the roadway, necessitating emergency repairs. Another vehicle was also involved in the crash, but no life-threatening injuries were reported.

While the right westbound lane of I-40 has been reopened, the ongoing closure of the left lane is causing traffic delays in the area. NCDOT is urging motorists to plan accordingly, anticipate slower traffic, and consider alternative routes if possible. The agency is working to complete the repairs and fully reopen the interstate as quickly as possible.
