Face Coverings Within the School Environment

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Families:
The first days of the new school year have been filled with excitement and activity, and
we are delighted that students have returned to their schools and classrooms. At the
same time, we are deeply concerned about the rapid growth of COVID-19 exposures in
the school setting and, especially, by the large number of students who are quarantined.
Across our school system, more than 600 students were under quarantine yesterday.

The Rutherford County Board of Education met last evening to review those conditions
and to take additional action necessary to promote students’ uninterrupted learning.
Effective Monday, August 30, face coverings are required for students, school
employees, and visitors within the classroom setting. That requirement will remain in
place while Rutherford County remains categorized as a "High" transmission zone on
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 Community Transmission
Map. 

The Board's action intends to provide another layer of protection against COVID19 and its substantially disruptive effect on orderly school operations and students'
uninterrupted access to in-school, in-person learning.
Rutherford County Schools will continue to apply additional mitigation strategies to
reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, including proper hand hygiene practices,
environmental cleaning and disinfecting, and other efforts aimed at promoting a safe,
healthy school environment.
