Waynesville --  A grandmother and her young granddaughter tragically lost their lives following a two-vehicle collision in Waynesville on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred when Margie Rathbone, 57, was driving south on Highway 276 (Jonathan Creek Road). According to initial reports cited by WLOS, Rathbone attempted to make a left turn onto Asbury Road and drove into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.

Rathbone and her 8-year-old granddaughter, Ryelie Ponder, who was a passenger in the car, both succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck reportedly suffered serious injuries, described as non-life-threatening, and was transported to Mission Hospital for medical attention.
