FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A sexual assault suspect in Tennessee has died after being shot and killed by an officer in North Carolina who was trying to arrest him.

Fayetteville Police said Friday that the suspect, 48-year-old Glenn Eldridge of Maynardville, Tennessee, died from injuries he suffered in the Thursday afternoon shooting. He had been taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment after the shooting.

Police said a Fayetteville detective who was part of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force shot Eldridge while attempting to serve a fugitive warrant. The task force is assigned to apprehend fugitives considered most dangerous.

Police said Eldridge was armed with multiple guns.

Eldridge was white. Police did not release the race of the officer who shot him, whose name is being withheld. He has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard while the shooting is investigated.

The shooting is being investigated by state and local police as well as the U.S. Marshals Service.
