Buncombe County Parks & Recreation Dec 18, 2024: Thanks to MountainTrue, French Broad Riverkeeper, and an awesome group of volunteers for their partnership in helping clean up Alexander River Park!
Over two days, teams removed about 2,400 pounds of trash from the river, including this mass of piping that MountainTrue and Riverkeeper staff untangled from the trees.
And the clean-up efforts keep moving forward – today, crews were continuing the work at Ledges River Park.

Dough House Donuts: All the donations and shares last week got our GoFundMe up by nearly $1000! THANK YOOOOOU!!!
We are still not out of hot water, however. The money we’ve raised so far has helped us each week with our foot traffic and sales both in such a steep decline. Thinking back to our previous 2 holiday seasons at DH, it’s one of the many daily reminders we get about how much was lost and how far away we are from “normal.” I totally almost lost it yesterday when I saw the same pile of debris by the i40 on ramp that I’ve been looking at since September. Yesterday it just looked so much worse for some reason.
OKAY GETTING MISTY AND IT’S TOO EARLY FOR THAT. My point here is that we at Dough House still need all the support you’re willing to give, but so does everyone else who lives here. If you feel like you’ve donated enough to us, please consider donating to someone else. I’m meeting more people everyday without homes, pets, family members. Buncombe County Schools: 🎁 Enka High School students went above and beyond this year for their annual Elves for Enka project.
During the last week before Winter Break, Enka High’s Student Government Association (SGA) filled gift bags with hoodies, T-shirts, snacks, toiletry items, and goodies in preparation for a distribution party on Dec. 19. Thanks to generous community support, the gift bags went to 180 students who could use some extra support going into the holidays. The distribution party featured ice cream donated by the EHS Men’s Basketball team, movies, and a station for students to wrap presents for their families.
Each year, Elves for Enka brings the whole community together. Students hold a friendly competition to see which class can raise the most money. The EHS Student Services Department also raises money and buys the clothes, toiletries, and other goodies that fill the gift bags. The Biltmore Lake Community supports Elves for Enka through their Giving Garland project, and local businesses and individuals pitch in. The SGA organizes the fundraiser and assembles the bags.
“We want everyone to feel special going into the holidays,” said EHS Senior Class President Carson Goforth. “This year we had a lot more help from the community and students, so we were able to fill more bags.” #enkahigh #buncombecountyschools

Yesterday, APD Officers had the honor of spreading holiday cheer at Aston Park Health Care Facility on Brevard Rd. We were joined by Temple Baptist Church, who filled the air with the sounds of Christmas carols, bringing joy to all. 🎶
We had a festive gift raffle and were able to provide 122 blankets to ensure all residents received a gift of a cozy blanket to keep them warm this holiday season #avl #asheville
