Great Smoky Mountains National Parks -- September 25, 2024: Elk breeding season (rut) is here, but it doesn’t really bring

peace—there’s no holding back that bugling and this is a very stressful time for elk.

Behavior for male elk (bulls) changes dramatically this time of year. Testosterone is high and they are competing for dominance. Bulls may charge or challenge anything they see as a threat, including humans and vehicles. Female elk (cows) are still protective of their calves and are further stressed by the activity of males.

The fields around Oconaluftee and Cataloochee are closed to all entry to protect the (somewhat) romantic atmosphere.
During the sweet caress of twilight (and always), obey speed limits and stay alert. Elk get hit by cars on park roads every year. They frequently cross the roads around Oconaluftee, Cataloochee, Balsam Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

There are no uncertainties here. Willfully approaching elk within 50 yards, or any distance that changes their behavior, is against park regulations and puts you and the elk at risk. If elk are present, please remain in or near your vehicle. If an elk approaches you, slowly back away and give it plenty of room to pass.
Help us reach for that perfect harmony. Keep your distance, slow down, and respect these incredible living things.
