Asheville -- July 19, 2024: Asheville Police Department Press Release: Asheville Police Department Patrol Officers

    investigate a fatal collision in the East Asheville area in which a cyclist was struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon.


    The preliminary investigation indicated Alexander Rozos (01/10/98) was on a bicycle traveling west near the 300 block of Swannanoa River Road around 11:42 a.m. on July 18 when he was struck by a white box truck traveling in the same lane and direction. The driver of the vehicle left the scene before officers arrived. Rozos succumbed to his injuries while on scene; next of kin has been notified.

    After further investigation by officers, the vehicle and driver were located later that afternoon.
    Upon completion of the Asheville Police Departmentโ€™s investigation and consultation with the Buncombe County District Attorneyโ€™s Office, the driver, Mauricio Roberto Melgar Delgado has been charged with Felony Hit & Run causing Serious Injury/Death.

    Delgado was taken into custody on July 18 and booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $50,000 unsecured bond issued by the magistrate.
