Asheville -- April 23, 2024: On February 14, 2023, Asheville Police Department (APD) officers carried out surveillance and crime prevention.

Donterian Steffon Shivers, 34,  was seen sipping a beer in a local park, while seated in his car. Officers watching Shivers exposed his beltline during the surveillance noticed a weapon tucked under his pants. Shivers' car left Walton Street, and the APD pulled him up for having an open container and a hidden weapon.


A beer bottle, loaded 10mm Glock semi-automatic weapon, a significant amount of cocaine in a rucksack, $850 in cash, and two cell phones were discovered during a search of Shivers' car.

After analyzing the material found in the bag, the N.C. State Crime Lab determined that 246 grams of cocaine were present.

On April 15, 2024, Shivers pleaded guilty to two counts of felony trafficking in cocaine, one count of misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun, and one count of possession of an open container 

Shivers will serve 35-51 months in prison, and pay a $50,000 fine.
