Man Dies in Asheville Head-on Collision

Asheville -- January 22, 2024: A deadly motor vehicle accident on Sweeten Creek Road Sunday afternoon is being investigated by the Asheville Police Department.

According to an APD press release, at 4:27 p.m. on January 21, Asheville Police Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash involving injuries near Sweeten Creek Road 75. 

The early investigation shows a 2009 Honda Civic driven by 30-year-old Andrew Benjamin Freeman northbound on Sweeten Creek Road near Caribou Road. Freeman tried to unlawfully pass a car at high speed, got into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane, and hit a 2018 Nissan Armada head-on.  

A 2018 Nissan Armada driver was sent to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Freeman died at Mission Hospital after being taken there. His family was notified.
