Asheville -- January 16, 2024: On Monday morning, after a verbal altercation, Asheville Police obtained arrest warrants for a man who rammed into the vehicle of another man and then opened fire.

At approximately 4:02 a.m. on January 15, APD Patrol officers were dispatched to the vicinity of State and Hanover Street in response to a report of a lethal weapon assault and gun discharge. Following a verbal altercation, investigators found that an individual was the target of pursuit by an opposing vehicle. After colliding with the man's vehicle, the pursuit vehicle's driver proceeded to discharge their firearm. Following that, the offender escaped the area. The man's vehicle was not struck by bullets; fortunately, no one was injured.


Officers discovered three shell casings while scanning the vicinity. Authorities promptly tracked down the offender's vehicle, which was discovered to be vacant, shortly thereafter.

Following an additional inquiry, the gunman was identified as Tony Dale Roberts (06/20/1985). To locate Roberts, for whom the Asheville Police Department has outstanding warrants, the public is urged to assist.

After further investigation, Tony Dale Roberts (06/20/1985) was identified as the shooter. The Asheville Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating Roberts, who has warrants for the following:
-Felony Discharging a Firearm from within an Enclosure
-Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill
-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
-Hit and Run
-Discharge a Firearm Inside the City Limits
-Reckless Driving

Roberts is described as a white male, 5’11”, 165 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He is known to frequent the west Asheville area. He has a tattoo of the Pillsbury Dough Boy on his right forearm and a scar on his right neck.
