FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man died on Sunday after being shot at a residence where a “large gathering” apparently had occurred in the early morning hours, police said.

Fayetteville police said the dead man, Donovan Butler, 25, of Fayetteville, arrived at a Hoke County hospital to say he had been shot at the home. Officers had been sent to the home around 2 a.m. to respond to reports of shots being fired.

“The preliminary investigation revealed there was a large gathering at the residence prior to the shooting,” police said in a news release, which didn’t describe further the gathering type or the number of people who attended. Fayetteville homicide detectives were investigating.

To blunt the intensity of the new coronavirus, Gov. Roy Cooper’s statewide stay-at-home order bans gatherings of more than 10 people and directs people to practice social distancing. A violation of the order can be a misdemeanor.
