Haywood County --  Press Release Haywood County Government:  Haywood County Health and Human Services Agency along with Haywood County Animal Services would like to remind residents and visitors to be aware of the possibility of rabies and distemper in area wildlife.

-Both rabies and distemper can present with similar symptoms, but distemper is not contagious to humans

-There are currently no confirmed cases of rabies in Haywood County

-Haywood County is home to typical rabies carriers, including bats, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and skunks

-Rabies is spread through contact with blood or saliva of an infected animal

-Rabies and distemper vaccines are available and encouraged for all dogs, cats, and ferrets

-Vaccines are the best line of defense for household pets, and (rabies vaccines) are required by state law

-Rabies is fatal (usually within 7 days) once symptoms have started

-If you encounter an animal acting strangely or appearing ill, please do not approach.

-Secure your pets away from the animal

-Keep your distance and call NC Wildlife Commission (866-318-2401) for assistance

-If an exposure occurs, contact Haywood County Animal Services (828-456-5338) to assist with processing for testing

**Exposure is defined as direct contact between the blood and/or saliva of an infected animal and the blood or mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, etc.) of another animal or human**
