Henderson County -- After a joint investigation by the Sheriff's Office Property Crimes Unit and Fugitive Apprehension Unit, a South Carolina man wanted on several felony offenses was taken into custody in Henderson County.

Sammy Clayton Weaghington, 57, of Greenwood, South Carolina, was the subject of an investigation by the Property Crimes Unit in 2024 after he used a closed bank account to fraudulently buy a trailer from a Henderson County company.  He was wanted for Felony Worthless Check and Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretense, but he left the area before they could find him.

Investigators discovered reliable evidence that Weaghington had returned to Henderson County on May 6, 2025.  He was working for a debris removal company helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene when officers found him at a works site in the Fletcher subdivision.  After being apprehended without incident, Weaghington was discovered in possession of a trailer that a Rhode Island law enforcement agency had reported stolen.

Officers conducted additional inquiry and discovered that Weaghington had been living in a camper in the Gerton neighborhood.  A stolen camper and two other stolen cars that had been reported missing from different Tennessee agencies were found there by members of the Patrol Edward Squad and Property Crimes Unit Officers found a total of: • One trailer that was reported stolen in Rhode Island
 • In Tennessee, one camper was reported stolen.
 • In Tennessee, two cars were reported stolen.

It is thought to have been sold out of state because the trailer, which was first bought in Henderson County through fraudulent means, has not yet been found.

The initial felony warrants were served at the Henderson County Jail, where Weaghington was booked.  As the Property Crimes Unit finishes the investigation and looks into more accusations pertaining to the possession of stolen property, he will stay in custody.

Weaghington will be subject to extradition for unresolved warrants from four South Carolina law enforcement agencies and two Tennessee law enforcement agencies when his charges in North Carolina are decided.
