North Carolina --  More than 650,000 North Carolinians have signed up for health coverage through Medicaid expansion—less than a year and a half since the program launched.

The expansion, which began in December 2023, opened the door to coverage for low-income adults who were previously caught in the gap—earning too much to qualify for traditional Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance.

Governor Josh Stein emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "This is a momentous day – North Carolina has finally expanded Medicaid. More than 600,000 North Carolinians will get health insurance, our rural hospitals will get stronger, and thousands of people will get jobs."

How It’s Affecting Western NC

The impact is being felt right here in Western North Carolina. Health clinics in Haywood, Buncombe, Jackson, and beyond are seeing more patients walk in with coverage. Folks who’ve gone years without regular checkups are now managing chronic conditions, filling prescriptions, and accessing mental health services.

Many of those now covered include working adults, veterans, caregivers, and people in the service industry—folks keeping our small towns and cities moving every day.

By the Numbers:
Over 650,000 enrolled since launch

Available to adults ages 19–64

Covers individuals earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level

Dr. Charlene Wong with the NC Department of Health and Human Services says it’s not just about coverage—it’s about outcomes. “We’re seeing more people taking control of their health instead of waiting until things get serious.”

Still Time to Sign Up
If you or someone you know thinks they might qualify, now’s the time to take a look. Applications are open through epass.nc.gov or through your county Department of Social Services.

The expanded coverage includes doctor visits, prescriptions, preventive care, mental health support, and even maternal care and substance use treatment—all vital to our mountain communities.

If you’re one of the 650,000 already signed up, congratulations. If you’re not sure if you qualify, it’s worth checking. For more updates on local health, community news, and resources in your area, keep it locked on WNC Times.
