IRS Extends Tax Filing Deadline for NC & Other Disaster-Affected States
Washington -- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially extended the federal income tax filing and payment deadline to Thursday, May 1, 2025, for individuals and businesses in North Carolina and several other states hit hard by disasters in 2024—including the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
Automatic Relief for Disaster Areas
If your address of record is in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS has your back. There's no need to apply for this relief—it’s automatic. This extension applies to 2024 federal income tax returns and any tax payments that would normally be due on April 15, 2025.
This extension gives affected taxpayers some much-needed breathing room to get their paperwork, finances, and lives back in order.
States and Areas Covered
The May 1, 2025, deadline covers taxpayers in:
Entire states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama
Alaska: City and Borough of Juneau
New Mexico: Chaves County
Tennessee: 14 counties including Sevier, Greene, and Washington
Virginia: Dozens of counties and cities, including Roanoke, Danville, Wise, and more

Need More Time? You Can Still File for an Extension
If you need even more time to file (not pay), you can request an extension until October 15, 2025. Here's the catch:
Request it by April 15, 2025, if you're filing electronically
Between April 15 and May 1, disaster-area residents must file Form 4868 on paper—not electronically
Keep in mind: this is not an extension to pay your taxes. You’ll still need to make any necessary payments by May 1, 2025, to avoid interest and penalties.
