Haywood County --  A tragic incident occurred early Thursday morning, April 3, when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking along Interstate 40 between the two Canton exits.

According to authorities, the 52-year-old man from Clyde was walking westbound on the eastbound side of I-40 when he was hit by a vehicle traveling toward Asheville in the right-hand lane. The collision occurred around 6:30 a.m., between mile markers 31 and 33.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene

It remains unclear why the man was on the interstate, a roadway where pedestrian traffic is strictly prohibited under North Carolina law. Walking along or attempting to cross an interstate is not only extremely dangerous but also illegal, due to the high speed and volume of traffic.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been announced at this time.
