    The southern Appalachian Mountains act as “water towers” for the Southeast. Our Macon County streams, arising from the mountains, provide drinking water not only for Franklin, but also major cities located 100s of miles downstream. These same streams nurture incredible biodiversity, provide outstanding recreational opportunities from canoeing to fishing, are a major feature of the natural beauty here, and a strong attraction for visitors to our region.
    This presentation will look at the threats to water quality in Macon County as well as ways landowners and citizens can act as stewards of their streams.

    Franklin Police Department: Today, September 10, 2024 at approximately 7:45 AM, two fishermen on kayaks discovered a deceased person in the Little Tennessee River adjacent to the Macon County Greenway. This investigation is in the preliminary stages. At this time we do not know an identity of the person, a cause of death, or any other details related to the death. We will continue our investigation with hopes of finding answers, and notifying the family.

    Mainspring Conservation Trust is in need of volunteers for the Annual Little Tennessee River Cleanup.

    Calling all river enthusiasts! Whether you boat, swim, fish, or simply enjoy the beauty of our local waterways, Mainspring Conservation Trust invites you to participate in the annual Little Tennessee River Cleanup on Saturday, September 14th, starting at 9 a.m.

    Volunteers will gather at 544 E Main Street in Franklin in the empty lot across from the Mainspring office. A volunteer informational tent, dumpster, and recycling collection will be set up at this location. Participants can stop by the tent to pick up supplies, grab a map of major litter zones, and then head out to their chosen cleanup area. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their boats if they don’t mind collecting trash on the water, or they can assist as shoreside or wading volunteers.

    To show our appreciation, free pizza will be provided at the info tent at 12:00 p.m. Please register on our website to ensure we have enough pizza for everyone!

    The Little T is one of the most diverse freshwater habitats in the temperate world, supporting countless species of fish, mammals, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates—some of which are threatened or endangered. Unfortunately, littering, illegal dumping, and misuse have led to the accumulation of plastic bottles, tires, cans, and other debris in these vital waters.

    oin us for a half-day of conservation camaraderie as we work together to restore and protect the Little Tennessee River, creating a safe and clean environment for all who depend on it—from humans to hellbenders!
