Sweet Sarge dog Dixie was feeling terrible within a day or so of her arrival at the Adoption Center. Thankfully, Dr. Frankie at Haywood Animal Emergency was able to figure out the puzzling symptoms and diagnose Addison's disease. Her recovery was dramatic, literally overnight, and she is now a happy, lively wonderful young dog. The picture on the left was taken her first day at Sarge's, the one on the right shows the new Dixie, post treatment.
Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is caused by a lower than normal production of hormones, such as cortisol, by the adrenal glands. Treatment requires a monthly injection to supplement the adrenal hormones. This makes her special needs and perhaps difficult to place, We're hopeful that potential adopters will see beyond the Addison's, and recognize the wonderful, happy dog whose condition can be well controlled with medication.
