North Carolina -- Election November 2024 -- As the November 5, 2024 elections approach, it's crucial for residents of Western North Carolina to ensure
they are registered to vote and ready to make their voices heard. Here's everything you need to know about voter registration in North Carolina.
The in-person early voting period for the 2024 general election: Begins Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.
Ends 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.
The general election is on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.
Who Can Register to Vote?
To register to vote in North Carolina, you must meet the following criteria:
Be a U.S. citizen.
Be at least 18 years old by Election Day.
Be a resident of North Carolina and the county in which you intend to vote for at least 30 days before the election.
Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction, including probation, parole, or post-release supervision. However, individuals who have completed their sentence can have their voting rights restored.
How to Register to Vote
There are several ways to register to vote in North Carolina:
Online Registration:
If you have a North Carolina driver’s license or DMV-issued ID, you can register online through the North Carolina Board of Elections website.
By Mail:
Download and complete the North Carolina Voter Registration Application. Mail the completed form to your county board of elections office. Forms must be postmarked or received at least 25 days before Election Day. Download here
In Person:
You can register in person at your county board of elections office or at any voter registration drive that may be conducted in your area. Additionally, you can register at the DMV when you apply for or renew your driver's license.
During Early Voting:
North Carolina offers Same-Day Registration during the early voting period. You can register and vote at the same time if you go to an early voting site. You will need to provide proof of residence, such as a North Carolina driver’s license, other government-issued photo ID, or a current utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck showing your name and address.
Voter Registration Deadline:
To vote in the November 2024 election, your voter registration application must be received by your county board of elections by October 14, 2024.
Early Voting Period: Early voting typically begins 19 days before the election and ends the Saturday before Election Day. For the November 2024 election, early voting will be available from October 17 to November 2, 2024.
Election Day: The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Checking Your Registration Status
It's important to verify your voter registration status ahead of time. You can check your registration status online through the North Carolina Board of Elections voter search tool. Absentee Voting
If you prefer to vote by mail, North Carolina allows absentee voting. You must request an absentee ballot by submitting an Absentee Ballot Request Form to your county board of elections. The form must be received by 5 p.m. on the Tuesday before the election (October 29, 2024). Once you receive your ballot, it must be returned and received by the county board of elections by 5 p.m. on Election Day or postmarked by Election Day and received no later than three days after the election.

Voters will be asked to show photo ID when voting in North Carolina.
Most voters will simply show their driver’s license. But there are many other acceptable photo IDs.

All voters will be allowed to vote with or without a photo ID. If a voter cannot show photo ID when voting in person, they can still vote by filling out an ID Exception Form. If absentee-by-mail voters are unable to include a copy of their photo ID with their ballot return envelope, they can also fill out an ID Exception Form with their ballot.
