Pedestrian Dies, APD Reminder October is Pedestrian Safety Month

Asheville -- October 1, 2022: 2022sheville The McDowell Street bridge was the scene of a deadly incident late Thursday night, which is currently being  investigated by the Asheville Police Department.

Around 10:50 p.m. on September 22, Megan Perry (05/01/1990), who was walking on the road near the 560 block of McDowell Street, was hit by a car. After being taken to Mission, Perry passed away from her wounds on September 28 in the early afternoon; her family has been informed.
Officers advise people walking at night to wear light-colored or reflective clothing and to be aware of pedestrian protocol in honor of October being Pedestrian Safety Month.
They also advise vehicles to pay attention to crossings and roads with heavy pedestrian traffic. We urge motorists to keep an eye out for pedestrians. especially kids and teenagers who can move more slowly and with less predictability. Pay extra attention while you're near residential areas, playgrounds, and schools.
