North Carolina --  August 9, 2025: North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson has launched a major initiative, "Operation Robocall Roundup," to combat the surge of illegal and fraudulent robocalls plaguing the state and the nation.

The effort is part of a multi-state collaboration by the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, which Jackson co-chairs with attorneys general from Indiana and Ohio.

As part of the operation, Attorney General Jackson is taking decisive action, including sending warning letters to 37 voice service providers. These companies are accused of failing to comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules, such as responding to government traceback requests, registering in the FCC's Robocall Mitigation Databases, or providing a plan to reduce illegal robocalls on their networks.

"North Carolinians are getting bombarded with millions of invasive robocalls every day, and these communication companies are not following the rules to protect us," said Attorney General Jackson. "We are giving these companies three weeks to start following the rules so we can shield people from these annoying and illegal robocalls."

The task force, comprised of 51 bipartisan attorneys general, is also notifying 99 downstream providers that accept call traffic from the non-compliant companies. This action aims to alert them that they are doing business with actors who are not adhering to industry regulations.

In a related enforcement action, the FCC has announced it will remove seven of the 37 providers from the Robocall Mitigation Database. This is a critical step, as other providers are legally required to refuse to route calls from companies not registered in the database, effectively cutting off their ability to operate.

According to data cited by the Attorney General's office, North Carolinians have received almost 1.3 billion robocalls this year, with the state ranking in the top five nationwide for robocalls and text scams per capita. The ongoing enforcement actions by the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force and the FCC are part of a coordinated effort to hold companies accountable and disrupt the flow of illegal robocalls.
