Riceville Firefighter Dies in Training Accident

Montreat --   The volunteer firefighting community in Western North Carolina is in mourning following the death of a Riceville Volunteer Fire Department member in an ATV accident during a training exercise on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

The incident, which occurred near Montreat, also left two other firefighters injured.

Details surrounding the accident remain under investigation, but authorities have confirmed that an all-terrain vehicle was involved. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene, but despite immediate efforts, the firefighter succumbed to their injuries. The two injured members were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department released a somber statement expressing their profound devastation over the loss of their colleague. The tight-knit community of first responders has rallied in support, with the Black Mountain Fire Department sharing their condolences and solidarity in an online post. "We are devastatingly heartbroken by the recent event affecting our brothers and sisters at the Riceville Volunteer Fire Department," the Black Mountain Fire Department's post read. "In times like these, words fall short, but know our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering love are with each and every firefighter, their families, and the entire department."
