McDowell County --  McDowell County Sheriff Release: The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying

individuals responsible for recent destruction and theft of telephone, broadband, broadcast, and cable telecommunications lines throughout McDowell County.

Over the past several weeks, we have responded to numerous reports of destruction and theft of such utility lines which have resulted in significant damage and disruption to services, and communication. The Sheriff’s Office is working closely with local utility companies and other agencies to investigate each incident. Surveillance footage from local businesses and other locations is being reviewed, and Detectives are following up on all leads.

Anyone who has witnessed suspicious activity or may have more information is urged to contact our criminal investigations unit at (828) 652-2237 during office hours OR nonemergency dispatch on nights and weekends at (828) 652-4000. You can also submit a tip on our MCSO app, available for FREE download at the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Furthermore, if you observe any suspicious individuals or vehicles appearing to be working on utility lines—especially during nighttime hours—please contact us immediately. The destruction and theft of these utility lines is not only a serious crime, classified as a Class C felony, but also a major public safety concern.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the public’s assistance in keeping the county safe and protecting vital infrastructure.
