Haywood County --  Press Release Haywood County Government: At 97 years young, Charles Matlack isn’t slowing down—in fact, he’s in the middle of his 15th year of friendly competition at the Haywood County Senior Games.

With a quick wit, a warm smile, and an inspiring attitude, Matlack is one of more than 200 participants
in this year’s games—the largest turnout ever!

Matlack says he joined the Senior Games back in 2010 because he “wanted to be part of a fun group and keep exercising,” something he has always enjoyed. Now, at nearly a century old, he’s competing in seven events this year, including cornhole and miniature
 golf.

“My wife Judy is my inspiration,” Matlack said. “She keeps me active.” With her encouragement and support, Matlack continues to set an example for seniors across the region, showing that staying fit and involved is possible at any age.

He even finds time to joke about the competition: “I might have the chance to win in my age bracket,” he laughed. “The next oldest competitor is almost 20 years younger than me!”

The Haywood County Senior Games are a local tradition, originally organized in 1983 as part of a statewide movement to encourage health and wellness among adults 50 and older. Haywood County was one of the first three locations in North Carolina to establish
the event, and its legacy continues to grow.

Elli Flagg, Director of Haywood County Recreation and Parks, said the games are more than just a competition—they’re a celebration of life and community.

“It’s inspiring to see people like Charles out here, not only competing but uplifting others,” Flagg said. “He represents the spirit of what these games are all about.”

The Recreation and Parks team recently welcomed Alex Gates to the department. She’s jumping in with energy and enthusiasm, especially for programs like Senior Games.

“It’s been amazing to witness the sense of community and joy these games bring,” Gates said. “You can feel the excitement everywhere. It’s an honor to be part of something that brings people together in such a positive way.”

Matlack praised the event organizers for their efforts, saying the games are “well organized and structured well,” making it easy for participants to enjoy themselves and focus on fun and fitness.

The 2025 Haywood County Senior Games will conclude with a closing ceremony at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 8. Family, friends, and the community are invited to attend and celebrate
the achievements of all participants—especially those like Charles Matlack, who remind us all that it’s never too late to play. Please RSVP to
elli.flagg@haywoodcountync.gov.
