Buncombe County Commissioners Vote to Shut Down French Broad Outfitters Location
Buncombe County -- July 22, 2024: On July 17th, the Buncombe County Commissioners made a contentious decision to shut down
French Broad Outfitters' (FBO) Hominy Creek location, a popular river bar and recreation space that has become a beloved community spot since it began leasing the outpost along Asheville’s French Broad River in 2018. Known for its live music, riverside beach, and dog-friendly ambiance, FBO's Hominy Creek location has been a vibrant part of West Asheville since 2016.
The decision to close the location came despite a robust public outcry, with more than 1,800 people signing a petition to “Save French Broad Outfitters (FBO) at Hominy Creek!” The outdoor bar and event space, which is situated at the confluence of Hominy Creek and the French Broad River, is on county-owned land. The forced move is due to a previously overlooked stipulation in a land conservation easement agreement between Buncombe County and the nonprofit RiverLink.
This easement, signed in 2006, explicitly prohibits commercial business on the property, with the only exception being a sand dredging operation that has long since been abandoned. Despite the widespread opposition to its closure, Buncombe County spokesperson Lillian Govus stated that the county’s hands are tied. “There’s nothing the county can do because the land conservation easement is written to last ‘in perpetuity,’” Govus explained.
The stipulation was recently brought to light, compelling the county to act in compliance with the agreement. The enforcement of this stipulation has left many Asheville residents and FBO patrons disheartened, as the Hominy Creek location has been a key venue for community gatherings, events, and riverside leisure.
Supporters of French Broad Outfitters argue that the location has significantly contributed to the local outdoor and recreational scene, fostering a unique community space. The closure underscores the complex challenges of balancing commercial interests with environmental conservation commitments.
As Buncombe County proceeds with the closure, the future of the Hominy Creek location remains uncertain. Community members and supporters of FBO continue to express their disappointment and hope for a potential solution that might allow the popular spot to either reopen or relocate in a way that aligns with the conservation easement’s requirements. The commissioners’ decision serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of conservation agreements and the often difficult trade-offs between development and environmental preservation.
