Asheville --  For the first time since Tropical Storm Helene devastated the region in September 2024, freight rail service has officially resumed for businesses in the Asheville area.

Norfolk Southern announced the restoration of service on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, marking a significant step in Western North Carolina's ongoing recovery and economic revitalization.

The resumption of service applies to Norfolk Southern's AS Line, which connects Asheville to points west, including eastern Tennessee. This crucial transportation link had been out of commission for six months following extensive damage caused by the storm's unprecedented flooding.

Norfolk Southern crews undertook a monumental rebuilding effort, repairing infrastructure at 128 locations over more than 13 miles of track between Newport, Tennessee, and Asheville. The scope of the work included utilizing over 160,000 tons of aggregate materials and clearing more than 2,000 downed trees. A key component of the restoration was the replacement of the Pigeon River trail bridge in Newport, Tennessee, which was destroyed by floodwaters.

The entire restoration project for this western segment of the line was privately funded by Norfolk Southern, underscoring the company's commitment to the region's economic well-being.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein lauded the return of rail service, stating that it "is a positive step towards getting western North Carolina back on its feet and reconnected economically." He emphasized that this development will assist businesses in regaining their livelihoods and strengthen the supply chain for the region.

While the western connection is now operational, Norfolk Southern is also committed to rebuilding the section of the AS Line between Old Fort and Grovestone, including the historic Old Fort Loops, which also sustained severe damage. This 16-mile segment is expected to be fully restored by winter 2025, further enhancing the rail infrastructure in Western North Carolina.

The return of freight rail service is anticipated to play a vital role in supporting local industries, improving regional connectivity, and contributing to the broader economic recovery of the Asheville area following the devastating impacts of Tropical Storm Helene.
