Asheville Animal Welfare Groups Continue Partnership to Keep Pets and their Families Together
Free microchipping event on May 10 at ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance will ensure cats and dogs stay
safe this summer and beyond

In partnership with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, Asheville Humane Society, and the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, an initiative established last year to help reunite pet owners with their missing pets continues.
Continuing on the success of last year’s event, another free microchipping event will take place 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) in Asheville.
To guarantee an appointment, pet owners are invited to register in advance. Appointment times are flexible, and walk-ups will be accepted as available. Each pet will receive a tag for their collar or harness that features a QR code, efficiently linking the finder of a lost animal to their owner's contact information for a quick reunification if they ever go missing.
Executives from each organization will be available for media interviews for the first two hours of
the event. Microchipping has proven effective in increasing the likelihood of lost pets being returned to their
owners outside of the shelter. However, it is essential to keep contact information up to date to
maximize the effectiveness of microchips.
“We are thrilled to build upon this collaborative program and ensure the safety and wellbeing of
even more pets this year,” said Jeff Hassel, executive director of Asheville Humane Society.
“During last year’s event, over 160 cats and dogs received microchips and we look forward to
seeing more pets and their families on May 10.”
With Memorial Day and the summer season approaching, the risk of pets going missing
increases. Barbecues, open windows, people coming in and out of the house, and loud
fireworks can lead to pets getting lost. To ensure the safety of your pets during this time, the
following tips are recommended:
1. Microchip and ID Tags: Ensure your pet is microchipped and wearing an ID tag with
up-to-date contact information.
2. Provide a Safe Space During Loud Events: Summer often includes noisy events like
fireworks displays. Never use fireworks around pets or bring them to fireworks displays.
Opt to keep pets at home in a secure and comfortable space where they can retreat
during such events.
3. Use Leashes and Harnesses: When taking your pet for walks or outings, always have
them on a leash or harness. Even well-trained pets can be startled and try to bolt. A
leash provides an extra layer of security.
4. Be Mindful of Open Doors and Windows: We tend to keep doors and windows open as
the weather gets warmer. However, be cautious when doing so, as pets may attempt to
slip out unnoticed. Teach your pet to wait or stay away from open doors and check that
your windows are secure to avoid accidental escapes.
Remember, vigilance, proper identification, and a secure environment are key to keeping your
pet safe and by your side.
