Take a journey through Great Smoky Mountains National Park to see Manitoban elk if you're searching for a unique experience. In 2001, these magnificent creatures were successfully restored into the western North Carolina mountains. Elk have begun to wander into Maggie Valley, according to locals, but you're more likely to see them in the Cataloochee Valley, inside the park, at dawn or dark.
Maggie Valley's foliage is at its most vivid from early October through early November. Colors are brightest at higher elevations. Hikers and leaf-watchers will be able to witness vivid reds, golds, oranges, and yellows!

Maggie Valley is a fantastic place to visit in the winter! Cataloochee Ski Area and Tube World are located here, making it a terrific destination to ski, snowboard, and tube! Soco Road, a five-mile section of US Highway 19, is home to the majority of the town's businesses.
West of Maggie Valley, the Blue Ridge Parkway and US-19 join up 52 miles west of Asheville at touristy Cherokee The new 3,000-seat events hall at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort has hosted acts ranging from Hank Williams, Jr. to Lady Antebellum. This one-of-a-kind facility offers three levels of amphitheater seating for a range of events and programs. The main floor has it all, from dining for almost a 1000-person banquet to a 150-booth exhibition. Ther is a state-of-the-art conference room, the casino can host groups and meetings ranging from a small group to over 3,000 people. The costly but kid-friendly Santa's Land Fun Park and Zoo (828/497-9191, summer only, $23 adults) is a last gasp of commercialism at the edge of the national park, a traffic-clogged gauntlet of sites where you can "See Live Bears," "Eat Boiled Peanuts," or ride the "Rudicoaster."
