NC Governor Stein Launches "Rediscover the Unforgettable" Tourism Initiative at Asheville Regional Airport
Asheville -- North Carolina Governor Josh Stein kicked off a week-long tour of Western North Carolina Monday, launching the "Rediscover the Unforgettable" tourism initiative at Asheville Regional Airport (AVL).
The campaign aims to revitalize the region's tourism industry following the significant impact of Hurricane Helene. Governor Stein, accompanied by First Lady Stein, will spend the week exploring the mountains, supporting local small businesses, and highlighting the diverse attractions the area offers.
"Travelers often take their first steps into Western North Carolina right here at Asheville Regional Airport," said Governor Josh Stein during the press conference. He emphasized the region's unique appeal, stating, "Our mountains are home to unforgettable landscapes, experiences, and people; there’s something here for everyone. I urge folks from across the country to book their flight and come experience something unforgettable here in Western North Carolina."
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley underscored the economic importance of AVL, calling it "more than just a gateway—it’s a vital economic engine for western North Carolina." Lilley added, "This region’s resilience, beauty, and hospitality continue to draw visitors from across the country. Through the ‘Rediscover the Unforgettable’ campaign, we’re not only inviting people to experience all that western North Carolina has to offer—we’re helping local communities and small businesses thrive.”
The "Rediscover the Unforgettable" initiative, a collaboration between Governor Stein and VisitNC, was first announced at the reopening of Chimney Rock State Park, which is now operating with limited hours. The campaign offers promotional support to local chambers of commerce, tourism boards, and small businesses as they welcome travelers back and recover from Hurricane Helene.
Asheville Regional Airport, a crucial entry point for many visitors, recently unveiled a new concourse last month as part of an expansion project that began in 2023. In 2024, AVL celebrated a milestone for the second consecutive year, surpassing 2 million passengers with a total of 2,174,125 travelers. The North Carolina Division of Aviation's economic impact report highlights AVL's significant contribution to the region, supporting 22,745 jobs, generating over $1 billion in personal income, and providing $3.9 billion in economic impact for Western North Carolina.
Looking ahead to the fall, AVL will expand its offerings, hosting six airlines, including American, JetBlue, Delta, and United, with direct flights to major cities such as Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Dallas-Fort Worth, and Denver.
