BCSO K9 Tracks Down Hit & Run in Just 60 Seconds
Buncombe County -- October 28, 2024: Buncombe County Sheriff's Office: BCSO K9 Tracks Down Hit & Run Suspect
in 60 Seconds.
In just sixty-one seconds, K9 Mable from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office tracked down a suspect involved in a hit-and-run crash. Fortunately, the victims are recovering and doing well. On Friday, October 4th, a week after Hurricane Helene, Deputy Kaila Munkwitz and Mable were called to investigate a vehicle accident near Leicester Highway and Oak Hill Drive. The wife and two children of one of our deputies were injured in the incident and taken to the hospital. The driver of the stolen vehicle had fled the scene.
Although Mable is not an apprehension K9, she sprang into action. Using a phone found in the stolen vehicle as a sent article, Deputy Munkwitz gave her a command, “Find him.” Mable soon pulled firmly toward a house, went down the driveway, and began wagging her tail slowly, indicating she was close to someone.
Another deputy from the BCSO spotted Dylan West hiding between bushes and a retention fence. He was arrested and taken to the Buncombe County Detention Center.
Dylan West was charged with:
- Possession of Stolen Goods/Property
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
- Driving While Impaired
- Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle - 3 Counts
- Felony Hit and Run
- Flee/Elude Arrest
- Reckless Driving
- Driving Left of Center
And was placed in the Buncombe County Detention Facility with a $20,000.00 bond.
