Rutherford County -- October 15, 2024: William Parsons, a 44-year-old resident of Bostic, was arrested for threatening

FEMA workers involved in recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene on Saturday.

Authorities were alerted when Parsons, armed with a rifle, reportedly made comments about harming FEMA employees working in the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock areas. Initially, rumors suggested militia involvement, but further investigation confirmed Parsons acted alone.

He was charged by the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office with "going armed to the terror of the public" and released on a $10,000 bond.

FEMA workers paused some operations due to the threat, prioritizing safety during the hurricane response.

Law enforcement emphasized that precautions were taken to protect the recovery teams, which have faced ongoing threats during their work. FEMA continues to monitor the situation and adjust its operations as necessary to ensure the safety of both workers and residents in affected areas.

The arrest highlights the challenges faced by disaster response teams, including misinformation and threats, which have disrupted relief efforts following the destructive hurricane.
