HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. —A North Carolina girl who accidentally shot herself in the head on Christmas Day died

Tuesday evening, December 28, 2021 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Henderson sheriff's office released the following statement:

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the child (Aylee Gordon, 3 years of age) who suffered a gunshot wound on Christmas Day in Henderson County N.C. has passed away at Mission Hospital (Asheville NC) on the evening of Tuesday, December 28, 2021.

A 911 made by the father, retired Henderson County Sheriff's Captain Tim Gordon, said she climbed into the truck and found the gun someone visiting for Christmas had left. The call was made about 2:45 p.m. 

Gordon said he was calling from the car, with his daughter and wife in the backseat. They were headed to a fire station because he was having trouble getting a signal on his cellphone.

"She picked up a pistol and shot herself in the head on accident," Gordon said.

The shooting happened on Spicer Cove Road in the Edneyville community.

Charges will be at the discretion of the NCSBI and the District Attorney’s office.

A GoFundMe page was setup to for Aylee prior to her death.
