Haywood County, NC -- PRESS RELEASE June 4, 2020: Haywood County Health Department COVID-19 cases are still on the rise in our county.  Most positive cases are in the 25-49 age range.

Because it can take 2-14 days to show symptoms, people are being exposed without realizing it and then passing it on to others.  The current pattern is that people who are infected but asymptomatic are attending gatherings, going to work, and otherwise circulating in the community without practicing the 3Ws, subsequently infecting family, friends, and coworkers. This is why we are constantly imploring EVERYONE to practice the 3Ws to help reduce the spread:  WEAR a mask whenever you’re in public or with others at work, WAIT six feet apart, and WASH your hands frequently for 20 seconds or more with soap and water.  It’s also important to regularly clean and disinfect any frequently-touched surfaces. YOU could be that unwitting carrier passing the illness on to others.  Be considerate and protect the health of others by practicing the 3Ws.

Note: It seems as if masks have actually become something of an issue, and claims are circulating that they are ineffective.  There are even rumors that they are somehow a danger, which is untrue.  Masks are not 100% effective for eliminating the spread of COVID-19 and have never been promoted as such.  They are one of the multiple tools to be deployed to reduce the risk of transmission and are most effective if everyone opts to wear a mask.  Masks help to reduce the number of infectious aerosol particles released during speaking.  Mutual masking results in the least exposure.
