Yancey County: Press Release Yancey County Government: March 6, 2025 – Today, Governor Josh Stein visited Yancey County to evaluate the

impact of recent storms and discuss

ongoing recovery efforts. His visit included three significant stops, highlighting his commitment to supporting the community during this challenging time.

Micaville School: Governor Stein met with the former principal to discuss the storm's impact on the children, the transition of students to other elementary schools, and concerns about missed school days. They also explored possible summer learning programs for Yancey County and other Western North Carolina schools. "Ensuring our children continue their education without disruption is a top priority," said Governor Stein. "We are working on solutions to make up for lost time and provide additional learning opportunities."

South Toe River: The Governor met with Mr. and Mrs. Hilliard, residents of Yancey County, to hear about their personal losses and the storm's impact on their lives. This visit underscored the Governor's dedication to understanding and addressing the needs of affected families. "Listening to the stories of those directly impacted by the storm is crucial," Governor Stein remarked. "Their resilience inspires us to work even harder to support their recovery."

South Toe Fire Department: Governor Stein took questions from the media and addressed legislative bills being passed and recovery efforts in Western North Carolina. He emphasized the importance of community resilience and the state's commitment to supporting recovery initiatives. "We are committed to providing the necessary resources and support to help our communities rebuild and recover," Governor Stein stated. "Our legislative efforts are focused on ensuring that no one is left behind during this recovery process."

During his visit, Governor Stein also met with local officials in Yancey County, including Commissioner Chairman Jeff Whitson, County Manager Lynn Austin, and Sheriff Shane Hilliard. These discussions focused on the coordination of recovery efforts and addressing the specific needs of the community.
Governor Stein acknowledged the financial challenges facing Western North Carolina, stating, "I understand the financial issues that many families and businesses are facing in the wake of these storms. We are committed to providing the necessary resources and support to help our communities rebuild and recover."
