This week’s Training Night proved to be both a rigorous and rewarding experience for Banner Elk Firefighters, who teamed up with students from the Lees McRae Rural Firefighting Class for a comprehensive field exercise and rescue scenario. The collaboration between seasoned firefighters and the next generation of rural responders highlighted the importance of teamwork and command structure in emergency situations.

The exercise tasked students from the Rural Firefighting Class with taking command, utilizing the Incident Command System (ICS) to fill key operational roles. This hands-on opportunity allowed the students to apply classroom knowledge to a high-stakes scenario: a group of missing juveniles, one of whom required a high-angle rope rescue due to their precarious position.

Despite rainy and chilly conditions, both teams worked in sync, successfully locating and rescuing all of the “missing” juveniles. The high-angle rope rescue, which is particularly challenging even under ideal weather, was executed smoothly, showcasing the training and expertise of both Banner Elk firefighters and the Rural Firefighting Class.
Command, led by the students, performed flawlessly, effectively managing resources and coordinating the rescue. The ability to seamlessly integrate ICS principles with practical rescue operations was a key takeaway from the evening’s drill.
Teamwork, as always, was crucial to the operation’s success. Both veteran firefighters and students worked hand-in-hand, overcoming the challenges of the weather and the complex nature of the rescue scenario. The event not only reinforced the importance of communication and coordination in emergency response but also provided invaluable field experience to the aspiring rural firefighters.

As Banner Elk Fire and Rescue continues to collaborate with educational institutions like Lees McRae, these joint exercises serve as a reminder of the ongoing dedication to preparedness and the essential role teamwork plays in keeping the community safe.
