Community Members with Ties to Swannanoa Invited to Join Steering Committee
Buncombe County -- Press Release Buncombe County Government: At its May 20 meeting, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution forming the Swannanoa Small Area and Resilience Plan Steering Committee.
Made up of 11-13 Swannanoa residents and other collaborators with ties to Swannanoa, this committee will provide guidance to County Planning Department staff, review data and public input, and work to ensure that the planning process is representative of the community.
This plan will address topics commonly found in Small Area and Corridor Plans, such as recommendations for housing, transportation, health, and recreation, as well as goals and actions related to future disaster mitigation and resilience.
The Buncombe County 2043 Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2023 and identified the Swannanoa corridor as one of several areas of the county in need of more detailed planning. The devastating impacts of Tropical Storm Helene increased the need for a plan for Swannanoa's future growth.
"We recognize the profound impact and loss caused by Tropical Storm Helene, and we wish to honor the resilience shown by the Swannanoa community in the face of the hardship and adversity caused by the storm," said Principal Planner Gillian Phillips. "By partnering with ongoing recovery work, this process will be grounded in strengthening resilience and shaping a future that reflects the community’s vision for the Swannanoa Valley."
County staff will collaborate with residents, business, local groups, and other community partners and service providers to gather data and public input, research existing plans, and determine the boundaries of the study area. With the community, the steering committee will identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges facing the community, and select recommended solutions through goals, policies, and actions that are specific to the history, character, and needs of Swannanoa.
Interested community members can apply here. The deadline to apply is June 20,2025. The committee will be appointed by the Board of Commissioners in August, 2025.
