Illegal Drug Tax? Yep!

Did you know that in addition to criminal consequences, North Carolina also taxes illegal drugs? It's true: although infrequently (and maybe never) paid by drug dealers at the time of sale or receipt, the NC Department of Revenue taxes the sale or possession of unauthorized substances. The issue usually only comes up when an individual is arrested and charged with a drug trafficking or possession crime, at which point an unexpected tax assessment may arrive in the mail. The tax, interest, and penalties can total hundreds of thousands of dollars and should be taken seriously, separate and apart from any criminal charges.

Put down that pine straw!

If any person shall take and carry away, or shall aid in taking or carrying away, any pine needles or pine straw being produced on the land of another person upon which land notices, signs, or posters prohibiting the raking or removal of pine needles or pine straw have been placed in accordance with the provisions of G.S. 14-159.7 , or upon which posted notices have been placed in accordance with the provisions of G.S. 14-159.7 , with the intent to steal the pine needles or pine straw, that person shall be guilty of a Class H felony.

Need An Ambullance? 

G.S. 14-111.1and G.S. 14-111.2. Obtaining ambulance services without intending to pay therefor.
These two sections prohibit the same thing. Well, almost. There are two differences between the statutes that I find puzzling. G.S. 14-111.1 states: "Any person who with the intent to defraud shall obtain ambulance services for himself or other persons without intending at the time of obtaining such services to pay a reasonable charge therefor, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor." G.S. 14-111.2 reads similarly: "Any person who with intent to defraud shall obtain ambulance services without intending at the time of obtaining such services to pay, if financially able, any reasonable charges therefor shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor." By itself, that distinction is interesting. But there's more. G.S. 14-111.1 only applies in three counties: Buncombe, Haywood, and Madison. G.S. 14-111.2 applies in 51 counties.
