The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has officially announced that Yancey County Schools is one of ten districts selected to receive a specialized grant aimed at expanding Career and Technical Education programs in homebuilding and residential construction. Yancey County was awarded $18,000 to bolster its efforts in preparing students for the trades by providing them with the resources needed to master residential building skills.
The funding, authorized by the General Assembly, supports program costs for career pathways that prepare students for careers in the construction trades. These grants put hammers, tools, and real-world skills into the hands of students across North Carolina, helping them build a pathway to a career while strengthening their communities.
In Yancey County, the program allows students to engage in large-scale, hands-on construction. Specifically, students are building tiny houses, which provides a comprehensive look at the residential building process from the ground up. This practical application ensures that the classroom experience translates directly to the physical demands of a job site and combines homebuilding skills with community impact.
Beyond the technical skills, the program emphasizes the attainment of industry-recognized credentials. Students earn National Center for Construction Education and Research certifications and OSHA safety credentials. These qualifications are designed to make graduates immediately competitive in the workforce, allowing them to enter high-wage employment or pursue further education in community college or university settings.
The initiative aligns with the state strategic plan, Achieving Educational Excellence, which calls for preparing each student for their next phase in life through career readiness pathways and workforce partnerships.
